I Once Bought a Fake Gold Chain

In the year that I worked as a pawnbroker, I only took in, as far as I know, one piece of fake jewelry. An interesting part of the experience of standing behind the Pawn Shop counter is learning that people come in with the intention of swindling you. People often hope to get as much money as they can for something a) they are not coming back for, b) they stole and shouldn’t be selling or c) isn’t what they say it is.

They stand in front of you and lie and, teary-eyed or confident, they’re convincing.

A girl stood on the other side of my counter one day with a gold chain. It should’ve clicked when she seemed surprised at the amount I offered her for it. I did a quick scratch test to see if it was real, but it can be difficult to tell if things are gold plated. My inexperience made me an easy target, and I gave the girl $100 for a necklace that wasn’t worth ten….

In the Valley of Postponement

There’s a beautiful moment in a beautiful book called Hind’s Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard (don’t you love all those h’s?) where the main character is told that instead of continuing to climb the mountain she’s hoping to climb, she is going to have to first go down into a valley, through a desert. The path seems to be taking her away from the High Places she is hoping to reach. She calls to the Shepherd.

“Oh no,” she cried, “You can’t mean it. You said if I would trust You, You would bring me to the High Places, and that path leads right away from them. It contradicts all that You promised.”

“No,” said the Shepherd. “It is not a contradiction, only postponement for the best to become possible.”

Tough to hear, sometimes.

There are lots of moments in our lives when we are waiting. Sometimes for something we’ve been excited about for a while. Sometimes for something we’ve been dreading. It seems postponed for one reason or another. We’re waiting to find that special someone. We are waiting to become pregnant. We are waiting for our favourite team to come out on top at the College World Series. We are waiting for the diagnosis or the test results.

Life seems to be full of postponements.

These days you all know that we’re passing the time however we can waiting for the arrival of a little bundle of joy. We’re excited to meet this little one on the outside, and kind of thought he’d be here by now. So things feel a little postponed.

My Uncle was scheduled to have triple bypass surgery last Wednesday, but the surgery was postponed because he had a heavy cold and they didn’t want to operate while he was sick. After dreading the surgery for quite some time, I think waiting another week was discouraging. {Unless there is another postponement, he is scheduled to have surgery today, so please say a prayer for him.}

In my uncle’s case, as in my own, I am hoping and trusting that things that feel like unpleasant delay are actually postponement for the best to become possible. Corrie ten Boom encouraged us never to be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.

Jesus put it like this:

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” {Matthew 6:34, the Message}

If our trust is in the God who can cause everything to work out for the good of those who love Him, then indeed, we need not worry, or even allow a perceived postponement to discourage us. We will miss out on now if we can’t take our eyes off tomorrow.

I’m sure each of us can recall a time in our lives when a check in the mail, a well-timed phone call, some moment that seemed postponed or delayed, actually turned out to be postponement for the best to become possible.

So hang in there when it feels like all you can see is a big “Postponed” sign on the door of what you’re dreaming of, or dreading. The Creator of the Universe has it all under control, and if you trust Him, He can weave things together so well, you’ll be left speechless and thankful for His perfect timing.

Travelling Tuesday: Swellendam (Part Deux)

Happy Tuesday! I was hoping this post would be hitting the web automatically because I’d be in the hospital with a new baby but … no news to speak of yet! In the meantime, I promised to continue the story of our adventure to Swellendam (as introduced last week) — our last overnight outing as a family of three with one on the way. And where I left off, I was telling you that we found the cutest coffee shop and were enjoying a latte and a muffin on our one full day away.

So here’s the coffee shop!

With cute details.

And water features.

And bicycles accentuated by feather dusters.

And Bears climbing stairs looking like big boys.

And I continued a tradition begun in my last pregnancy: letting a cat get the cream.

Here in St. Ives, England (2008), me, cat, and cream, respectively:

And now in Swellendam, South Africa:

Yes, this blue dress is a very regular occurrence in my maternity wardrobe.

Aren’t cats such delightfully interesting creatures? Does this have some special symbolic meaning in some other culture, mayhaps?

After coffee time we took a drive to nearby Witsand. Something that always amazes me about South Africa is how quickly the landscape can change. One moment you’re in lush and green mountains, five minutes off the highway in a different direction, you’re in rolling hills of wheat and everything seems to be the same colour — a warm reddish brown as far as the eye can see.

Then we arrived in Witsand and watched some folks learning the art of kitesurfing.

We found our bearings and began making our way back to Swellendam. (When you’re heavily pregnant, an air-conditioned drive sure is nicer than a walk.)

We enjoyed an afternoon of swimmee and swingee, and watched the mountains change moods once more…

And we set up a family photo before our departure the next morning! Look at the four of us!

Pregger shot!

We took the long way ’round for the drive home…there are so many beautiful passes to enjoy driving or hiking or biking in SA.

All in all, it was a great wee adventure. I must say we were a bit pooped on the way home.

On Slow Moving Time and Royal Engagements

These days are like lyrics from the 2005 Madonna hit with some ABBA sampling… Time goes by. So slowly. I suppose it’s because I’m 39 weeks pregnant, not feeling up to getting out much more than is absolutely necessary, tinkling so often I’m concerned there will soon be a world shortage on toilet paper, and glancing at the clock throughout the day, saying “Is that it?”

We’re still keeping busy with baking (and enjoying the fruits of that labour), of course, most recently brownies and chocolate chip muffins, and everything seems to be ready for baby’s arrival except, well, baby.

I’ve been reading lots and enjoying a very calm period before what will most likely be a very busy period. And we folks at the Collie household have been doing a lot of sitting still, enjoying some diverting conversation to pass the time.

Today at lunch, the subject came up of the royal engagement of the Prince of Monaco. Perhaps this summer will be deemed the Summer of Royal Weddings. Besides Prince William and Kate’s do in late April, Prince Albert and a South African lass named Charlene Wittstock are set to tie the knot with a royal wedding sometime in the summer of 2011.

The funny thing about this particular announcement is that Hero Hubs knows the soon-to-be-princess, Miss Wittstock, as he swam with her during his competitive swimming days a few moons ago. He also did a course in Sports Massage Therapy during his swimming career, and Charlene was one of his patients.

Agnes and I had lots of giggles at the thought of this everyday gal becoming a princess. My immediate response was to ask if she and Mark were friends on Facebook. After a few more laughs Agnes began considering how Charlene would have to change all her documentation to include the title “Princess.” The comment that took the cake (by Agnes):

She could get “Princess” as the title on her bus pass!

Indeed.

Should Charlene Wittstock require a bus pass after her magical royal wedding this summer, she will now have the privilege of visiting the Lothian Bus offices on Waverley Bridge in central Edinburgh and requesting that the title placed before her name be “Princess.”

And these are the types of things we chat about while we wait. Time goes by. So slowly. 🙂

P.S. Charlene, if you’re reading this, Mark Collie says hi. He and his wife would love to come to your wedding.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Mom!

It’s Valentine’s Day today, which means it’s an excellent day to think about love, perhaps to eat some chocolate (especially if you’re pregnant), and hopefully to celebrate all the love in your life worth celebrating. Hopefully this can be done without allowing commercialism to a) make you spend money when you shouldn’t or b) make you feel sorry for yourself when you shouldn’t.

{When any of the multiple Saint Valentines were martyred in Ancient Rome, I’m pretty sure none of them had boxes of chocolate in mind. Helping Christians get married at a time when you weren’t supposed to be helping Christians do anything, now that deserves some celebrating.}

Let’s extend the love to not just be about a significant other whom we should shower with gifts, or be showered by, whatever the case may be, today. (Saint Valentine risked his life to help people who may have been strangers.) Perhaps you can take an opportunity to be generous to a stranger — come back and tell us what happens!

I am celebrating the special love that grandparents have for grandchildren today by sharing the video we created for my Mom (a bit belatedly, but just in time for Valentine’s) in celebration of her trip to visit us here in SA late last year, around the Bear’s birthday. Hero Hubs of course made it extra-specially boo-tee-full, so I thought you might enjoy it, too!

Have a love-filled day!

I’m struggling to get the Video (on Vimeo) to embed, so just click Mom’s South Africa adventure to watch!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Wouldn’t today be a great day to give birth?
